Formerly the site of UpTown Independence, which has been disbanded as a formal organization, this site is dedicated to promote the merchants and businesses of the Town of Independence, VA. Independence is located at the crossroads of Hwy 58 and Hwy 21 in rural SW Virginia just 5 miles north of the North Carolina state line. Independence is 12 miles north of Sparta, NC, 12 miles west of Galax, VA, 23 miles south of Wytheville and 25 miles east of Marion, VA. The county seat of Grayson County, Independence is the home to the Historic 1908 Courthouse which is a combination local artists gift shop, museum and performance venue and the outhouse race during the annual Mountain Foliage Festival is the Official State of Virginia Grand Privy Race.
